A journey into the forces that protect, disrupt, and redefine the beautiful mind.
Sex Differences in Alzheimer's Disease
Alexander Conley
(Research Assistant Professor, Vanderbilt University Medical Center)
This talk explores some of the reasons behind the difference in prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) between the sexes. Women are twice as likely as men to develop AD, and several risk factors may contribute to this discrepancy, including genes and following menopause. These midlife changes can have an impact on an individual’s future risk or resistance to AD.
Critical Illness and progression of Alzheimer's Disease: A role for Inflammation
Rachel Spicer
(Postdoctoral Researcher - Vanderbilt University Medical Center)
We often think inflammation is bad, but is there a balancing act to be had when it comes to critical illness and progression of Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia? In this talk, Rachel will explore the role of inflammatory cells in the brain during disease progression, and how critical illness of the body impacts the development and progression of these brain disorders.
