From the fragile sense of self to the hidden symmetries of the cosmos, our world is shaped by patterns we feel and patterns we seek. When perception shifts, meaning can fracture; when symmetry holds, mysteries unfold. Journey from the human mind to the universe itself, where understanding begins with recognizing the unseen.
Disembodiment and Metaphor Use as Mechanisms of Social Dysfunction in Schizophrenia
Sophia Kekes-Szabo
(Postdoctroal Fellow, Vanderbilt University)
Humans understand the world and each other through language rooted in bodily experience. In schizophrenia, both figurative language (like metaphors) and the sense of self can be disrupted. We propose that these difficulties are linked: when the sense of one’s body and self is altered, understanding metaphor and social meaning becomes harder, contributing to social challenges.
Symmetries: Solving Nature's Hidden Mysteries
Brenda Fabela Enriquez
(Senior Lecturer & Physics Labs Director, Vanderbilt University)
Nature loves symmetry. From snowflakes to galaxies, the universe follows elegant patterns. But what if there's a hidden symmetry we haven't discovered yet? In this talk, we will explore how physicists use symmetry to solve one of the universe's deepest mysteries: dark matter.
